In 1917, 3 children in Fatima, Portugal claimed to have seen an apparition of the Virgin Mary. The lady is claimed to have given them a message about humanity and requested their presence at a specific time and place over the course of 6 months. The apparition declared that two of the children, Jacinta (age 7) and Francisco (age 9), would be taken to heaven soon, but Lucia (age 10) would live a long life. All of the children were instructed to keep parts of her message a secret, which they did at great peril. After having told of the apparition, they were met with ridicule and shame from priests, authorities, and their families. The authorities attempted to force them to confess that they had lied by jailing the three, but none of them ever changed their story, and held strong to their convictions. As prophesized, Jacinta and Francisco died soon after from illness, and Lucia went on to become Sister Lucia.
